While designing custom labels for your product can be fun, there are definitely some common pitfalls that you’ll want to avoid. We’ve come up with some custom label design “don’ts” to help you and your business.

Designing Your Label Before Your Packaging

When starting the process of creating your custom label, you’ll want to make sure that you’ve nailed down your product’s packaging first. There are a couple of reasons for this, the first and foremost being that if you don’t have measurements for your packaging, it will be very difficult to determine the right size for your label. The last thing you want is to design and order your custom labels only to find out that they do not fit well on your product. Designing your packaging before your label will ensure that you do not spend any extra money or time on labeling!

 Using Too Much Text

Another common mistake when designing custom labels is not knowing when too much is too much. Yes, you want to convey what it is that your product does/provides the consumer, but at the same time, you don’t want so much text that your label is unreadable or overwhelming.

Save wordier text for the back of your product, and keep the front of your product simple and easy to comprehend. For example, if you are selling hair dye, the front should include the brand name, the color contained inside, a photo and a short description or testimonial showcasing the product. The last thing you want is for a customer to choose another product simply because the label was easier to read and understand.

Brand Inconsistency

When your business produces multiple products, it can be easy to lose your brand’s identity if you’re not careful. Why is it important to stay consistent in your branding? Think of your favorite brand–what’s the first thing you associate with them? Their logo. For example, when you think of Dunkin’ Donuts, you think pink and orange. They are a prime example of keeping your brand’s identity consistent across the board.

How do you keep consistent with your branding? Choose a signature color or color combo that consumers can recognize your brand from. While it may be tempting, don’t switch up your logos and coloring all the time. If you’re branding changes like the seasons, your customers will have a hard time recognizing new products as yours. Branding is all about building trust and recognition with current and potential customers!

Choosing The Wrong Adhesive

Choosing the right adhesive may be the last thing you think about when making your label, however, it may be one of the more important details. Why? If the adhesive used does not properly adhere to your product’s packaging, you run the risk of the label peeling, fading, wrinkling or flaking–overall looking unprofessional and hap-hazard. Not Using a Professional Label Company

So you’ve taken all of the necessary steps to design the perfect label for your brand, why go with a label company that isn’t going to work just as hard to produce them? Don’t go with the first thing that comes up on your Google search, you’re going to want to do your research and be sure that the company you go with will produce top tier labels for your brand.
